Dartmouth's own Professor John Smith, who taught the subject from 1777 to 1803, authored a Hebrew textbook that was printed in Boston. One hundred and eighty years later, a professorship in Hebrew once again exists at the College, and it seems fitting that Hebrew type.

Written with a wide-nibbed reed, the Sephardi letters had strong horizontal and vertical lines that minimized the contrast among the lines in each letter. However, as the Sephardi style developed, a thinner reed was used to introduce more contrast within the letters.
